Some sets feel like one long move: you step in and the groove doesn't let go for hours. That's how Max Sprauer plays.

Born in New York and based in Brooklyn, he is a collector before he is a DJ. He runs Pearled Records — a vinyl-only label whose first record came pressed on pearly white — and he plays from the bag: hunting records on Discogs, travelling the country to find them in person, arriving in the booth with that selection under his arm. It holds house, techno, electro and the odd detour into trance, but it never sounds like a cabinet of rarities: it sounds like a single idea held for hours. He also makes his own edits — opening a record, rebuilding it, returning it to the floor in another shape — a craft of patience more than effect.

Faciendo: the night measured in hours

Sprauer is a member of Faciendo, the near-anonymous entity he forms with Desyn, Tom Morgan and Rama. Their premise is simple and hard: play long, very long, until the set becomes a form in itself. The sessions don't open by chasing the peak; they start far out and take their time getting there, closer to open-to-close than to the quick high. It's the same logic as the collector who picks the right record over the easy one: the reward is in sustaining, not dazzling.

In New York his nights run through rooms like Elsewhere and through his own label's parties; away from home he has played start to finish in cities like Boston, toured North America with Faciendo, and played Berlin from the floating booth of the Hoppetösse. Always the same format: room for the music to breathe.

Pearled Records: two records, no rush

As a label, Pearled moves at its own pace. It debuted in 2021 with Elon's Tschmanik EP (PRL001): UK garage–rooted breaks and grooves built for the hour when the sun starts slipping through the rafters, distributed by Lobster Theremin and mastered by the Zenker Brothers. In 2023 came Sweater's Perspiration Nation (PRL002), the Philadelphia producer who crosses house and breakbeat with nerve and feeling. Two EPs in two years: a catalogue chosen slowly, not an assembly line.

Quito, for the first time

On Friday 25 September Max Sprauer plays Quito — his debut and, for now, his only date in the city — on a Frequenza night alongside Silvia Ponce and Didi. Secret location in Tumbaco, from 9pm until late. Knowing how he reads a session, it's worth arriving early and staying.
